Dolpa, Nepal, is known for its Dolpo region. This high-altitude area in the Dolpa district has strong trade connections with Tibet rather than with the rest of Nepal. The locals speak Tibetan and primarily follow Buddhism, particularly the BON tradition.

The region is famous for its “CARAVAN,” which involves trade to Tibet via the Yarsagunbu route. After a month-long journey with yak caravans, various goods, including salt, are delivered. The film CARAVAN, directed by Eric Valli, was shot in this area and even nominated for an Oscar. Following the film’s release, Peter Matthiessen’s book The Snow Leopard gained significant attention from locals and tourists, further highlighting the beauty of Dolpo.

The zoologist George Schaller, whom Matthiessen accompanied to the Himalayas, says that forty years after “The Snow Leopard” ’s publication, the animal has grown slightly less mysterious. Photograph by George Schaller

Recently, another film was shot. It is called “SHAMBALA” by Min Bham. Dolpo is always gorgeous but challenging during the minute, and it is one of the popular places for photography and filming in Nepal.

I had the opportunity to visit Dolpo for photography many years after the release of CARAVAN and The Snow Leopard. To my delight, Dolpo was just as captivating as portrayed in the films and books. The people and landscape of Dolpo exceeded my expectations. I will share a series of photos from my trip here: www.panoramanepal.com. Feel free to visit, comment, and share your thoughts or any information!
